Arapaho Knife Sheath / 1860

A sheath constructed from buffalo hide whereby the obverse is decorated in sinew-sewn seed beads. The upper hemisphere consists of a bisected hourglass motif, constructed from lanes of pink, powder blue, translucent blue, and greasy yellow. The motif sits on a white field. The lower hemisphere consists of pink and translucent blue radiating stepped lines, framed by blue. White and blue padre beads adorn the terminating fringe. Accompanying the sheath is a period knife constructed from a file.
